A few people have asked with concern about my situation, and I want everyone to know that I am not at risk.

Deception Bay is about half an hour north of Brisbane and well away from Wivenhoe Dam's run-off zone. We are far enough back for tomorrow's king tide not to effect us, and as of today we only have one road closure (mainly because that road is low-lying) even though it has been pelting down here since last week.

Areas around me are being effected, with Caboolture to the immediate north now completely cut off, and Burpengary, Strathpine and its surrounds experiencing flooding and/or isolation.

I am a veteran of the '74 floods and my thoughts are with Brisbane over the next couple of days, and my heart goes out to everyone in Toowomba, its surrounds and everyone who has already been effected by the flooding. Donations can be made here.

The sad thing is that it isn't over yet. Huge amounts of water is still running into Wivenhoe Dam and some of it has to be released just to keep the dam safe. And that run off is going to go into the Brisbane River, which Brisbane is built all along.

Watching the news isn't helping my nerves! *wry grin*

Unfortunately, the next couple of days is going to be bad for Brisbane and Ipswich. The water is still running into Wivenhoe Dam and we've still got a king tide to come.

It's a bit petty, but I can't help but be relieved I'm not living in Brisbane any more. One major flood was enough for me.

The silly thing is that I'm actually between flood plains! I'm just in from the coast (less than 10 minutes from the sea) and between Caboolture, Brisbane and the Pine Rivers Shire, all of which are flooding. We're saved because we aren't in a river/creek catchment or downstream of a dam.

It's scary. Even though I'm safe, it still causes a flutter. I was in Brisbane during the '74 floods and watched whole suburbs go under (fortunately from a high vantage point). I can't believe it might all be happening again.

But it's the sheer concept of flash floods through town centres and whole towns that is just mind-boggling.

Thank you! I'm safe, but the thought of what Brisbane, my home town and just half an hour south of me, is going to go through in the next day or so is sickening. And that's on top of what places like Toowoomba and Grantham have already suffered.

It's easy to forget, during the dry times, that we are actually semi-monsoonal in Queensland.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not in a catchment area. Tonight and tomorrow is going to be scary - Ipswich is expecting a third of its area to go under when the Bremer peaks tonight and then the Brisbane River is due to peak tomorrow.

And that's on top of what has already happened in places like Toowoomba, Grantham and the Lockyer Valley where lives have been lost to flash floods.

*nods* Parts of the CBD and inner suburbs are already going under. I just saw footage of Milton starting to flood. They've evacuated the XXXX brewery! *grins*

Energex is going to have to start cutting power in parts of the Brisbane inner suburbs and in low-lying areas of Ipswich tonight. Some of their high voltage substations are underground and they can't risk water getting into that much electricity.

It's been amazing to see the footage! They're actually discussing scuttling a large restaurant ship called The Island and the Moggill ferry because they are at risk of slipping their moorings and becoming torpedoes down the Brisbane River. The Island has been running its engines for hours just to maintain its position, but they're not sure how much longer they can do that and the river isn't due to peak for another 10 hours.

The scale is huge. Brisbane has nearly 2 million people and is the capitol of our state. It's built around the Brisbane River and every time the river meanders, the land caught in those coils is flooding.

And parts of Queensland are going under for the 2nd or 3rd time in the space of a month! Chinchilla went under 10 days ago and is going under again.

Australia doesn't do anything by halves!

I'm still safe and not likely to be threatened, but Brisbane, Ipswich and a lot of other areas have still to peak. Ipswich is due to peak at over 19 metres in about an hour and Brisbane at 5.5 metres in about 10 hours. And Brisbane is basically built on the Brisbane River flood plain...

Was in Rocky when the news of Toowoomba came through. Unbelievable stuff. I couldn't get home quick enough (although it was fun landing in a storm at Brissie airport in a tiny jet!)

I was called in to work last night and saw six pontoons float by as I waited at the lights to get off the Riverside Expressway. Many more since then have gone down to float around in the bay. Amazing.
