Brisbane flood situation and me

A few people have asked with concern about my situation, and I want everyone to know that I am not at risk.
Deception Bay is about half an hour north of Brisbane and well away from Wivenhoe Dam's run-off zone. We are far enough back for tomorrow's king tide not to effect us, and as of today we only have one road closure (mainly because that road is low-lying) even though it has been pelting down here since last week.
Areas around me are being effected, with Caboolture to the immediate north now completely cut off, and Burpengary, Strathpine and its surrounds experiencing flooding and/or isolation.
I am a veteran of the '74 floods and my thoughts are with Brisbane over the next couple of days, and my heart goes out to everyone in Toowomba, its surrounds and everyone who has already been effected by the flooding. Donations can be made here.

Date: 2011-01-11 10:04 am (UTC)Glad to know you;re safe, sweetie, and here's hoping things improve soon. The scale of the flooding is simply mind boggling. Poor, poor people.

Date: 2011-01-11 10:40 am (UTC)Unfortunately, the next couple of days is going to be bad for Brisbane and Ipswich. The water is still running into Wivenhoe Dam and we've still got a king tide to come.
It's a bit petty, but I can't help but be relieved I'm not living in Brisbane any more. One major flood was enough for me.

Date: 2011-01-11 10:48 am (UTC)But it's the sheer concept of flash floods through town centres and whole towns that is just mind-boggling.

Date: 2011-01-11 10:50 am (UTC)It's easy to forget, during the dry times, that we are actually semi-monsoonal in Queensland.

Date: 2011-01-11 11:25 am (UTC)Energex is going to have to start cutting power in parts of the Brisbane inner suburbs and in low-lying areas of Ipswich tonight. Some of their high voltage substations are underground and they can't risk water getting into that much electricity.

Date: 2011-01-11 01:29 pm (UTC)But that won't stop Brisbane and Ipswich from flooding, unfortunately, as the water run-off has to go somewhere.

Take care *hugs*

Date: 2011-01-12 08:05 am (UTC)And parts of Queensland are going under for the 2nd or 3rd time in the space of a month! Chinchilla went under 10 days ago and is going under again.

Date: 2011-01-11 08:34 pm (UTC)The BBC site was leading for a while on parts of Brisbane being evacuated. It sounds appalling.

Date: 2011-01-12 08:09 am (UTC)I'm still safe and not likely to be threatened, but Brisbane, Ipswich and a lot of other areas have still to peak. Ipswich is due to peak at over 19 metres in about an hour and Brisbane at 5.5 metres in about 10 hours. And Brisbane is basically built on the Brisbane River flood plain...

Date: 2011-01-12 11:33 am (UTC)Was in Rocky when the news of Toowoomba came through. Unbelievable stuff. I couldn't get home quick enough (although it was fun landing in a storm at Brissie airport in a tiny jet!)
I was called in to work last night and saw six pontoons float by as I waited at the lights to get off the Riverside Expressway. Many more since then have gone down to float around in the bay. Amazing.

Date: 2011-01-12 12:46 pm (UTC)The footage is amazing. The number of things hitting the pedestrian bridge and getting stuck is scary. And that floating cafe that floated away was surreal.
Did you fly in yesterday? We basically had storm after storm from before dawn until mid-afternoon.

Good thing I didn't have to head home this weekend - some of the highway is closed. But we're still better off than QLD...
