A few people have asked with concern about my situation, and I want everyone to know that I am not at risk.

Deception Bay is about half an hour north of Brisbane and well away from Wivenhoe Dam's run-off zone. We are far enough back for tomorrow's king tide not to effect us, and as of today we only have one road closure (mainly because that road is low-lying) even though it has been pelting down here since last week.

Areas around me are being effected, with Caboolture to the immediate north now completely cut off, and Burpengary, Strathpine and its surrounds experiencing flooding and/or isolation.

I am a veteran of the '74 floods and my thoughts are with Brisbane over the next couple of days, and my heart goes out to everyone in Toowomba, its surrounds and everyone who has already been effected by the flooding. Donations can be made here.

*nods* It's scary to watch the news coverage. The thought of flash floods through actual towns is just mind-boggling.

We've had a few (much smaller ones) over the last few years, but mainly through small villages, and with nowhere near as a high a death toll. (Though sometimes that has been by plain luck.)

You see flash floods footage from the mountainous areas of Europe and can't imagine it. So having it happen so close to home is scary. Toowoomba is probably about an hour's drive west of Brisbane and is a lovely area. This time last year they were on extreme water restrictions and still managed to put on their Spring flower show with recycled water! And now they're flooded.

When I was in Queensland about 12 years ago, the rivers were very low and the talk was of water shortages, even in the rain forest.

It was only about a year or so ago that our combined dam capacity was under 20%. We tend to lurch from one extreme to the other. It's a strange country. *g*
